Some fundamental aspects of atmospheric dynamics, with a solar spinoff

(Michael E. McIntyre)

Here is a scanned reprint of my big 2002 review article `Some fundamental aspects...' which appeared on pages 283-305 of the Royal Meteorological Society's compendium Meteorology at the Millennium edited by R. P. Pearce (330 pp). Copyright © Academic Press. This is my most thorough published discussion of the great paradigm change in our understanding of global-scale atmospheric circulations -- recognizing the dominance of wave-induced angular momentum transport over turbulent momentum transport -- and showing in addition how it led to a breakthrough in understanding the dynamics of the solar tachocline.

In the astrophysical literature, `Meteorology at the Millennium' is sometimes mistyped as `Meteorology and the Millennium'.
