Tachocline fluid dynamics: an interim assessment

Michael E. McIntyre

Talk presented to the Princeton meeting on "Differential Rotation in Stars", 12 May 2011 and to the Gargano meeting on "Waves and Physics", 23 June 2011.

In this talk I tried to survey how far we have come in understanding the tachocline -- a complex fluid-dynamical jigsaw puzzle.

The talk and the accompanying movie files, slightly updated for the Gargano meeting, are available here as well as on the Gargano meeting's website

Some of the ideas are also summarized in the second edition of Stellar Magnetism by L. Mestel, Oxford University Press (in press for 2012).
