Research

Laura is a member of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and the Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics research group. Under the supervision of Peter Haynes, her PhD research investigates the variability of jet streams using simple, idealized models. Jet streams are ubiquitous in planetary atmospheres and oceans, with key examples including mid-latitude jets in the Earth's troposphere, multiple jets in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and flows on gaseous giant planets such as Jupiter and Saturn. Idealized models allow the spontaneous formation and equilibration of persistent zonal jets. The nature of their time variability in the equilibrated phase is of interest both because of its relevance to the behaviour of naturally occurring jet streams and for the insights it provides into the dynamical mechanisms operating in these systems.

Alongside her PhD research, Laura also studies stratified shear instabilities and the subsequent transition to turbulence under the supervision of Pascale Garaud (UC Santa Cruz) and Colm Caulfield (University of Cambridge). This work, which started as a GFD summer project at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, has applications to the interiors of stars.
